Phone fixed. Now what?

Okay, removing and replacing the battery worked, and apparently this is a known issue with this kind of phone. I don't like it, but at least now I know what to do about it.

Tangentially, there's a video clip I really wish I could find again. Imagine angry young man, Radial youth type yelling; "Fuck the police!" ..and this male police officer saying in a very camp voice "Ooo! Yes Please!!"
